MENTAL GAME, MORE THAN SKILLS

When discussing the mental game we’re not just talking about the mental skills needed to excel. There are other facets, one of which is the philosophical approach or view a person has about them self within their realm of performing. I’m talking about understanding why we do what we do, “why do I love playing …. ?” And specifically for this discussion, answering the question, “When I retire what are my peers going to say about me, how do I want to be remembered? As we come to know and deeply understand the answers to these philosophical questions we will have more PURPOSE and power to control ourselves and act in a way that is becoming of a champion.

As you evaluate your career, whether its on the field/court, in the office, on the stage or wherever you may be pursuing excellence ask yourself “How do I want to be remembered?” Over the last few days in the sporting world there have been a few extraordinary examples of sportsmanship and giving. As well as some examples of poor sportsmanship and failure to control emotions. See the brief descriptions and links as follows to  learn more:

– Carissa Moore a 17 year old pro surfer donated her prize money ($15,000) to the local kids board rider club! Read the article “Carissa is Moore that just a surfer” at http://www.grindtv.com/athlete/carissa-moore/news/

– Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics lost his cool with 40 seconds left in the game and got suspended for the next playoff game. The other person in the incident, Quentin Richardson was fined $25,000 for his involvement. Read more here  Garnett’s suspension

– Brian Davis, a pro golfer called a penalty on himself that cost him the win but he gained a great deal of respect! Read more here A Loss for Brian Davis but a big win for golf

How do you think these people will be remembered?

These people and the choices they’ve made are great examples of this philosophical approach beyond their performances to how they live their lives. Ultimately, understanding yourself and your philosophies will lead you to perform and live on a higher level! Why? Because, based on your philosophy, the way you choose to act and carry yourself before, during and after your performances affects you and your performances! You will have more joy,  fulfillment and impact plus you will achieve more!

Now I want you to apply it! So sit down with paper and pen or at your computer and I want you to seriously think about how you want to be remembered, literally! Think about and write down what people are going to say about you at your retirement benefit. Not just how you played or performed but what type of person you were. The impact you had on their lives, how you treated them and others. As you identify and commit to this you will train, play and interact with more passion, grace and poise. All of which lead to performing better.

PURPOSE!    PRESENCE!     POWER!
