The Giants, a ragtag bunch of misfits as labeled by their manager Bruce Bochey, got the job done in 5 games. They exhibited superior pitching, hitting, defense and coaching by out scoring the Rangers 29-12. That is impressive to say the least! I heard Bruce Bochy say after they won the NLCS “these guys are all working for the same thing, they are all pulling in the same direction.” I’ll take a ragtag bunch of guys like that any day! Bochy said after tonight’s win “I couldn’t be prouder of a group. They played with heart and determination. They weren’t going to be denied. My staff, they accepted their roles and had only one mission.”
Four of the Giants; Renteria, Cody Ross, Aubrey Huff and Freddy Sanchez were cut loose by other clubs this season and before, they all wound up in San Francisco. Cody Ross, the MVP from the NLCS was let go in late August and now has won a world series. The team was virtually free of ego which is a rare thing especially in baseball. They were playing more for the name on the front of the jersey than the name on the back! As Bochy said above “…they accepted their rolls..”
When players take care of their individual jobs and as Phil Jackson says, “surrender the me for the we” there is nothing they can’t accomplish! Just as the fibers of a rope make it virtually unbreakable because they are all aligned pulling in the same direction. The Giants put on a clinic in team work and cohesion, hard work and the attitude “impossible is nothing.”
Take note and get yourself or your players to have this mindset and do the things Bochy said over an over.
1. Pull in the same direction 2. Have one mission 3. Work for the same thing
4. Play with heart and determination 5. Have the mindset “I/we won’t be denied”
6. Accept your roll and surrender the me for the we.
