What if the builders and architects of the Eiffel Tower would’ve listened to the doubters & skeptics? Where would we be if Columbus would have listened to those who said the world was flat? And what if Abraham Lincoln would have given up after losing his first race for the Illinois House of Representatives in August 1832 or the 3 additional defeats on his way to becoming President in May 1860?
In one of my previous posts I stated “we often get in our own way by doubting ourselves and our abilities based on past performances.” Sometimes we even have “self doubt” because of what others i.e. coaches, media, teammates etc. may have said. Let me say this, no one can tell you how or what to think! Nor should you allow any situation or particular performance dictate your mindset.

Dr. Bob Rotella said, “Great athletes create their own realities, they think however they have to think to maintain their confidence and get the job done. In basketball this is called a ‘shooters mentality.'” A great shooter thinks and believes every shot is going in regardless if he/she made or missed the last one. This helps you play free, smooth and loose which gives you the best chance for success. If you don’t you will be tight and you will force it, that never works. So choose to believe in yourself, trust in your ability and your preparation. Start working on it in practice and watch your confidence grow. You will be astonished at the results.
The late great Johnny Unitas said “… if I don’t believe in me, who will.” I hope you liked the Dwayne Wade commercial on believing and trusting in yourself despite what you or others might think/say. Don’t give up just because at first you don’t succeed or someone says “you can’t”! What if failing 10 times is the thing that gives you the strength to succeed on the 11th? Its all about believing in yourself and going for it! Keep Going! Keep Believing!
