When things don’t go our way whether in life or sport we can be tempted to hang our heads, complain and even give up. But this will get us nothing but more misery and heartache. Instead, we should keep pushing forward, remembering & believing in our dreams and NEVER GIVE UP! Winston Churchill was quoted as saying “Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never, never – in nothing great or small, large or petty…” If success and greatness are our aim then we must be patient and persistent in our pursuit.
No matter the circumstances or the situation, no matter how little time is left on the clock we must persevere, continually pressing forward with our goal in mind. The USA soccer team is a great example of this mindset. On June 23, facing elimination from the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Algeria, the US side had to deal with more bad calls, missed calls and some otherwise bad luck. They kept pressing forward and giving all they had. With regulation time expired and only 3 minutes left in stoppage time they finally found the back of the net on a follow up shot by Landon Donovan. This was the go ahead goal they needed to advance to the next round.
Our easiest and toughest matches demand our maximum effort both mentally and physically from whistle to whistle. The team and individuals who are able to dig deep and deal with the adversity that will inevitably arise will have the upper hand. This mental toughness is invaluable when time is running out and tension is mounting. We must be able to keep calm, as the old saying goes “cooler heads prevail.”
Team USA exhibited extreme mental toughness and composure in a very pressure filled situation and their cooler heads prevailed! They never gave up! They never gave in! They never surrendered to the pressure, the poor officiating and the dirty play. Well done men, well done!
